DIY mehendi designs for Karva Chauth

DIY mehendi designs for Karva Chauth

When it comes to dressing up, Indian women don’t really need an excuse. We have so much to look forward to – weddings, festivals, anniversaries, birthdays and much more. So come Friday, the 30th of October, the ladies will be making a beeline for the nearest parlours and salons to ensure they look their best on Karva Chauth.

DIY Mehendi Designs

Karva Chauth is one of the most sought after festivals in India, celebrated by married women who fast for their husband’s long life. This fast is a toughie as one is not allowed to drink any water before the moon makes an appearance. Because Karva Chauth holds a lot of importance in Hinduism, preparations are made days in advance. Along with new outfits, getting Mehendi applied on hands and legs is considered very auspicious.

With the popularity of this fast spreading leaps and bounds, getting a nice design drawn, requires one to wait in long queues. And there is no guarantee that your turn is going to come or if the design is going to turn up as per your expectations.

Why allow yourself to face this situation when you can flaunt the most exclusive design without stepping out of the comfort of your home. Here are some DIY mehndi designs for you to try this Karva Chauth:

Karva Chauth Mehendi designs generally include intricate and delicate floral patterns. Alternatively, other popular patterns include leafy, lacy patterns, symbols such as peacocks, swans, sun, moon, stars, lotus blossoms etc. Opt for either a full hand or half hand design, both look beautiful and eye-catching.

The symbols have a unique significance and meaning associated with them. For instance,

Peacock –stands for grace and beauty

Swans-stands for success and beauty

Sun, moon and stars: stand for ever-lasting and deep love between soul mates

Lotus blossoms: stand for femininity, purity, creativity, beauty

Yearning for some twist?

Patterns with glitter and shine

Adorn the edges of your mehndi shapes and patterns with glitter. Preferably, choose a glitter color that matches the color of your outfit.

If you are a beginner and new to drawing patterns yourself, you may choose to go the half and half Mehendi way or a minimalistic style.

This is nothing but decorating half of your palm and hands with mehendi and leaving the other half empty. Drawing inspiration from the Arabic style, this one is popular amongst office goers and ladies who don’t have the time and patience to draw an elaborate design.

You can also opt for the Palm mehndi style, wherein the design is drawn in the palm area with thin and dark lines.

However, if you are well-versed with the nuances of mehendi designs, you can surely opt for the two in one mehendi designs.

mehendi-12This is one of the oldest styles and finds its way in the genre of bridal mehendi as well. The design consists of numerous shapes, curves, circles that are split into two with one part drawn on one hand and the other part on the other hand. When you join your hands, you will see the gorgeous complete design.

Get ready and enjoy every moment of this festival. Ensure that husband dearest pampers you with all the love, affection and attention. After all, it is your day and you ought to be treated like a Queen!

Cool hairstyles for Girls with Curls

Cool hairstyles for Girls with Curls

By Abhinaya

Curls are never out of vogue. Girls with curls may have that occasional “Oh! Wish my hair was straight” feeling but it’s hard to let go off the bouncy textured hair.  Here are some cool and interesting styling tips for your curls that will certainly make everyone go “Hey gorgeous!!”

Let it go. The less you mess with your hair the better you look. Just leave your long locks with a deep side part. After good conditioning, combing and applying a right hair serum…hands off!! Not an ounce of hard work needed to get that casual look. Check out how Beyonce flaunts her voluminous curls and gets the effortlessly gorgeous look.

Clip it up using a light hair accessory on one side and let all the curls do the talking on the other for a gorgeous looking Side Swept hairstyle.  Works best for an evening party or wedding night. Naturally curly-haired pop-sensation Taylor swift gets this side swept look bang on!!

On a hot day nothing better than pulling up your curls into a high center ponytail. Walk into your office looking formal yet stylish. Add a bit of variety by tugging some hair on to the front to get the bouffant puff!!

Having a bad hair day? Then look nowhere else than grabbing all the curls into a low tousle. All you need is a polished mess of curls and few bobby pins…Voila!! There you have your Oh-so-sexy messy bun.  Allow some curls to fall and frame your face for added texture. Who doesn’t love these?

Just pile those curls atop your head and get going with a Top knot. When you know it’s going to be a breezy busy day outside, these must be your go-to. Low on effort, high on style!!

Going half-up, half down is a great choice for mid-length curls.  Just grab the top half of your hair, pull it back as you smooth it with your hands and secure it with an elastic or barrette.  Isn’t it perfect for days when you don’t want the curls to hide your beautiful face? We are sure every curly-haired woman can pull of this two-minute look.  Look how Aishwarya Rai Bachchan sports the curly half-up, half-down hairdo

Taking on the Faux-bob will definitely help in upping the glam quotient by a few notches.  This can be another great option for mid-length curls.  Make a loose ponytail, roll your hair under and tug it in with pins to create the bob shape.  Fake bob? Yes. Fashion faux pas? Never!!

Our very own ‘Queen’ Kangana Ranaut never shies away from flaunting her natural curls and here she is with that faux-bob.  Cute or not?

Side braids work big time, whether you are going for a modern or ethnic look. Fish-tail or twisted or just the regular plait coupled with chic hair accessories is enough to look like a princess!!

A messy fishtail for her wavy hair has clearly been one of Deepika Padukone’s favorite looks.

For those blessed with long waves, go for a braid at the crown and let it loose or opt for a waterfall braid–just what you need on your special occasion!!

Hairstyle for Curly long hair

More often than not, the sleek and straight always long for waves while the curly girls yearn for smooth. We agree wavy to curly hair can be a pain in the neck when it comes to making them behave but nothing comes close to its cuteness when styled right. So its time to stop whining and embrace your curly tresses with these cool hairstyles!!

This winter, layering is going to take centre stage. How do you flaunt your clothes and keep yourself warm? Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to layer through the winter.

How to style your Jeans

When layering clothes with your jeans, the options are limitless.  For a casual look, depending on how cold it is, you can start off with a thermal t-shirt or a long camisole. Wear the top you want over it, add in your favourite scarf around your neck, and top it off with your woollen sweater of jacket.

For a formal look, start with the thermal and move on to a crisp white shirt over it. To keep yourself warm you could stick to the traditional formal jacket or coat – but we encourage you to try wearing a smart crop sweater-top over it. If your legs aren’t warm enough, experiment with leg warmers over your jeans under the boots or knee high boots.

How to style your Skirts

Don’t miss out on your skirts during the winter, because of the fear of the cold. There are multiple ways you can still rock the minis in this weather.

Once again, depending on how cold it is, you could try treating your sweater as a top itself and either tuck it into your skirt or leave it out. Now, here is when your thermal leggings come into place – keep them handy! Wear the leggings, add on a scarf or a woollen head band and boots/any shoe of your choice to complete the look.

Another stylish look is for the adventurous, you think you can bare a little skin against the winter wind? Wear your skirt, put on your tee and sweater – but instead of leggings try knee-high socks with your shoes. Alternatively leg warmers are also an option.

Different ways to style your skirts

How to style your Dress?

This is much like styling the skirt, important part is keeping those legs warm. Keep your leggings or warm stockings out. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated silhouette, layer your dress with a waist coat and a long winter trench coat.  If you’re looking for an informal look, pair your dress with leggings, a scarf and a loose sweater.

How to style your Shorts?

Love your comfy hot shorts, but it’s too cold, eh? Story of all our lives. Wear your leggings first and put on your shorts over them. It’ll still hold true to the shorts effect- bring out those sexy legs. Just like the skirt layering, you could either wear your sweater as your top or throw over a scarf with a jacket. Experiment with different heighted socks over your leggings to add extra warmth.

The Right Lip Colour For You

The Right Lip Colour For You

Loving the trending orange lip colour, the red one or the nude one? Want to try out a shade in purple or brown because it would be perfect with your dress? But unsure about whether it suits you?

Wearing a lipstick colour that doesn’t suit you can do quite a bit of damage to your over all look – it can make your skin look pale or dull, it can make your teeth look weirdly yellow, and bring out that epic make up fail that we all want to avoid.

There are various factors that you need to look at to decide which colours suit you best; take a look at an easy guide we’ve put together for you on how to pick the right lip colour.

Skin Colour

Just like how some colour clothing may not bring out the best, colour applied on an essential feature of your face such as your lips is very important to think through.

Fair Skin:

Nude shade for fair skin

If you have fair skin, stick to colours that will emphasize your complexion – pink, nude, shades of red. Don’t use colours that will make you look washed out like brown and yellow.

Shades of red for olive skin

Olive Tone:

Dark red lipstick

If you have medium toned skin with brown or olive undertones in it, then shades of pink will suit you well. Shades of brown and deeper shades of red would also help bring out the colour of your skin.

Dark Skin:

Pink shade of lipstick for dark skin

If your skin tone tilts towards the darker side, then generally almost any colour suits you. But if you want to be sure, shades of purple and brown are the best.

Shape and Size of Lips

Thin Lips:

If you have thin lips then try to avoid dark colours like brown, berry, red or purple. Instead go for colours like peach, pale pink, beige and nude.

Full Lips:

All colours for thick lips

If you have thick, luscious lips then good news! There is no colour that you should avoid. In fact, we encourage you to try on all shades, blood red, purple, pale pink, or brown. But be careful to check your skin colour match above.

Time of Day

Sober colours for the day

That’s right, you’ve got to be careful about which colours to where when too. If the sun’s out, it’s nice and bright, only choose colours like beige, nude, pale pinks, peach and berry shades. They will compliment your look in the day time. If you wear colours that are too dark, you might end up looking vampire-y or goth-y.

Darker colours for the night

Once the sun is down and out of the way, it is safe to bring out the reds, the mauves, the browns and what not. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you have to give up your day colours; they are welcome to join your party all night!

Sunglasses are such a huge fashion statement these days, but we got to admit, we’ve all struggled with finding sunglasses that suit our face. Today we’ve got you a quick lesson on which sunglasses suit your face shape.

Round Face

If your face seems like just curves, with no defined or noticeable angles – you’ve got a round face shape. Sunglasses you pick should have less rounded features and more sharp angles. It will help defining some angles on your face.

Go for rectangular or square styled sunglasses.

Round face structureSquare shaped sunglassesImage Courtesy:

Square Shape

Square shaped faces are generally characterized by width and length of the face being around the same. Broad forehead and strong jaw line are also some indications of this face shape. You need sunglasses with rounder frames.

Aviators and butterfly sunglasses are good options for square faces.

Oval Face

Oval faces are generally slightly long and rounded, everything is evened out. If you have an oval face, you’re really lucky! All frames look amazing on this face shape. Rounded, sharp, anything works. Just don’t get sunglasses that are too oversized.

 Oval face structure

All shapes of sunglasses

Oblong Shape

Oblong faces or rectangular faces are, as the name suggests, long. They mostly have wide cheek bones with narrow jaw lines and foreheads. Their face is mostly longer than it is wider.

Wayfarers and rectangular shapes will do well to add some angles to the face. Rectangular face shapes should avoid small frames.

Heart Shaped

Heart-shaped faces, also called triangle shaped faces are the widest at the temple and narrowest at the chin. The sunglasses for this face shouldn’t have any straight lines along the top.

Cat-Eye style, aviators and butterfly are best suited to the heart shaped face.

Diamond Shape

Diamond shaped faces have their cheek bones as the widest part of their face. The forehead is narrow and chin is defined. The ideal sunglasses for this face shape shouldn’t be wider than the cheek bones.

Oval and rimless sunglasses would go well.

I am sure, we have all already put some deep thought into this at least once in our lifetime. Which colours suit my skin tone? You’d be surprised how important this could be really. Wearing colours that don’t suit you risk making your skin look duller and tired. Your eyes end up looking dead, and it could also affect the perception of the colour of your teeth.

Whereas, wearing the right colours compliment your skin to make it look happier, healthy, glowing and your eyes look like they are sparkling! That’s definitely reason enough to confirm which colours you should wear.

Now, there are a variety of skin colour shades, but for convenience sake we are going to break it down into three – light, medium and dark skin tones.

Light Skin Tone

If you have light skin, you probably either have warm or cool undertones. You can decipher your undertone by looking for certain tinges of colour under your skin. If you have peachy shades in your cheek you have warm undertones. If you are on the pale side with no colour in your cheeks, your skin tone has cool undertones.

Warm undertones call for earth tones (brown, beige), shades of green, ivory, navy and green. If you want to wear orange, pick the lighter shades like peach, light pink or coral.

You should stay away from bright neon colours, they will clash too much with your skin tone. Too much of black might be too harsh for your skin, also too much white might make you look a little too pale.

Light colours for light skin tone

Cool undertones on light skinned women should go for deep reds, strawberry pinks, deep purples – the berry family. This will help compensate for the lack of colour on your skin. Also, jewel tones will do great for your skin – turquoise, emerald and amethyst.

Stay away from silver and stick with gold.  Also avoid colours that are too bright, neons and yellows. Black might give you  too much of a goth vibe, whereas too much white may make you look too pale.

Berry colours for cool undertone

Medium Skin Tone

If you have this kind of skin tone, you have to go completely opposite with your colours. Don’t wear shades of your skin tone – beige, caramel, orange, pale pastels or brown. They bring out a weird grey undertone, because these colours are too cool against your skin.

Instead you need to go for bright and deep hues that will pop against your skin tone. Pick rich colours like ruby, emerald, royal blue, deep pink and deep purple.

Dark Skin Tone

If you are dark skinned, you should preferably to stick to warm colours. The best colours to wear would be pastels, rich colours – yellow, gold, plum, purple and copper. Also, white works brilliantly with this skin tone. Orange and red families also look amazing.

Avoid colours on the cool end like gray, silver, and blue.
