The Historical Significance

Badi Al Zaman Shama began his perfumery on the outskirts of Agra in 1615. His skill and ingenuity, manifest in a range of exquisite attars, soon won him a following among the city’s wealthy elite. His reputation continued to grow, and it was not long before an emissary from the court of Shah Jahan paid him a visit. In 1639, eleven years after Shah Jahan ascended the throne of Agra, Badi Al Zaman was given the honour of supplying the royal court exclusive attars, made to order. Having gained the patronage of none other than the Emperor and his wife Mumtaz Begum, both of whom had a fondness for perfumes, incense, and aromatic oils, Badi Al Zaman attars reached greater heights of popularity and fuelled further business expansion. By the time Aurangzeb deposed his father in 1658, Badi Al Zaman had four separate perfumeries under his control. But he was 80 by then and had to hand over the business to his eldest son, Al Tufail Shama, who was 30 years of age at the time.

   Tangy rosemary-tinted citrus scents mingle with salty aquatic notes and aerial flowers (hedione). A sharp persimmon note adds a touch of sparkling color to the woody aromas of labdanum and cedar, with their warm musk undertones.
5. CHARISHMA
   A pure and sober eau de toilette developed around a middle note of sensual, modern vetiver. The spicy cardamom scent mixed with the tea note sharpens its modern character. Cedar and musk give it the lingering scent of a second skin.
6. SULTAN
   The subtly acidulous top note blends Sicilian lemon with Neroli from Grasse. The middle note unveils a spicy note of cardamom and coriander. The chypre and woody endnote is composed of oak moss and Virginian cedarwood.
7. JEANS
   The opening features a sparkling note of mandarin-orange peel enhanced with waves of camphor and mint. The spicier heart reveals the ambry-musky tonalities of clary sage. The warmer trail is composed of an association of white musks, tonka bean, cedar and sandalwood.
