We have always been advised to dress according to our body shapes in order to look good in whatever we year. So why not apply this fashion advice in choosing your wedding attire as well? Being your D-day, wedding dresses have to be planned and chosen to be the best to make you look special. Learn about the different styles in wedding gowns and how you can choose the best styles for your body shape.
Pear shaped women: Pear shaped women have a heavy bottom resembling a flair so they can choose skirt like gowns that are narrowest at the upper waist and flair out away from the hips and thighs in a flowing style. This will hide their heavy bottom and accentuate the relatively narrow waist. For the upper portion, spaghetti strap styles or V-neck can elongate and give the illusion of a slender upper torso. Choose fabrics such as duchesse satin or taffeta which are less clingy to the body for the wedding gowns. These styles are reminiscent of the earlier ball gowns that used to come with a fitted bodice and cinched at the upper waist.
Apple shaped women: They have a busty top and a relatively narrow lower torso. They should opt for styles with a scooped or sweetheart neckline. If you’re keen on wearing strapless, opt for ones that have a slight dip instead of styles that sit straight across as the latter might make you look bustier. Fabrics such as satin and silk or ruched styles on the upper torso should be avoided so as not to draw attention to it. For the lower torso you can opt for a flared out shape that has sufficient texture in the form of ruches or lace fabrics with designs on them.
Hourglass shaped women: Women with hourglass figures can opt for the mermaid style gowns if they are willing to show off their curves. Mermaid wedding gowns have an overall tapered slim fit look that flares out at the knee. Indian bridal outfits such as the lehenga too feature mermaid styles that give a similar shape. The disadvantage of this style is that it can feel constricting and some of you might not be comfortable moving around in them.
Rectangle shaped: These women should opt for wedding gowns in styles such as the empire waist, A-line or sheath style gowns to show off their slender figure.
For Plus sized women: Sometimes you are simply unable to categorise yourself into any of the above mentioned categories because of being plus sized. Most people give different kinds of advices and you are left confused as to what could suit you best. The best way to determine this is to try out certain styles and make a note of them so that you can rely on these for every occasion. One of the most popular styles of wedding dresses chosen for plus sized women is the empire waist style. The empire waist style however should not be tried out by busty women. Soft flowing fabrics will give the illusion of a slimmer body.
