Curtain Rods
Curtains after the inventions were proven to be very effective in dividing any area into parts but the problem of hanging them gave rise to the invention of curtain rods by Samuel R. Scrottronthe in 1892.
The curtain rods are essential to hanging curtains which are an inseparable part of home décor.
Uses
Curtain rods, also called curtain rails are used to hang curtains over the windows, bathtubs, doors or inside the room for room partitioning.
Curtain rods were initially used without rings. Curtains with loops of same cloth around the rod were used, though these are still in use but a more convenient way was to use rings is to have a little large diameter than the rod just to make the movement of curtains on the rod more convenient and fast. These rings proved to be complementary to curtain rods and were accepted widely by people.
Variety
Curtain rods can be made using many materials including wood, metal or plastic.
It is not that these rods are always simple straight poles but these come in endless designs suiting the decor of the place where they are to be fitted.
Curtain rods shaped in curves and hinged are available in markets which can be easily installed on a curved wall or a bay window.
With increasing uses of curtains from curtailing obscure natural light to absorbing excess heat to differentiating theatre stage from auditorium to water soaking in showers to absorb unnecessary noises and avoid echoing to avoid the risk of fire by using fireproof curtains, the requirement of curtain rods as the utility has increased.
Also, for designer curtains are complemented by designer curtain rails following which one can buy an expensive and decorative curtain rod he/she wants.
Types
Now before hanging the curtains, one needs to have a clear idea as to what kind of poles would be required to hang that particular type of curtains. There are different types of poles that are available and each has a different purpose when it comes to hanging the curtain. The fixing method will also vary depending on the type of rods that are being fixed.
Standard curtain rods or poles:
They are the simplest of all rods and are generally made of aluminum or wood. They are not decorative and serve just the purpose of holding the curtain in place. And hardly any part the curtain rod is visible when the curtains are drawn. These rods are fixed on the wall with the help of the brackets and often the assembly is hidden behind a cornice or a valance.
Spring rods:
They are quite common in hanging curtains and are rather easier to install and operate. To fix the spring rods one needs to fix the hooks at the two ends and the spring rod can be attached. The traverse rods have an assembly wherein the curtains glides across the window or door as and when the glide strings are pulled. These types of rods carry the curtains by attaching the movable hooks to the special provision made while making the curtains.
